Performance = Potential – Interference

"Performance = Potential – Interference"

This is a quote from Miles Downey's book  "Effective Coaching (2003)" which while not being mathematically sound does convey the problem that most of us suffer when attempting something challenging like driving innovation through a business.

The interference which damages performance or can stop us in our tracks comes from the nagging voices of doubt and uncertainty in our own heads.
One of the best ways to reduce the interference is to gain clarity in a coaching session. This sort of clarity won't come from thinking hard on your own. The power of another viewpoint and robust challenge of your assumptions creates clarity like no other approach.

Risk and Innovation

Any number of sayings and quotes point to what we really already know about innovation for business growth - "You can't make an omelette without breaking eggs"  " The meak shall inherit the earth - if that's alright with the rest of you?" Innovation takes guts and vision - take a risk to innovate propoerly or take the risk that your competitors overwhelm you with their innovation.

"Well, when you're trying to create things that are new, you have to be prepared to be on the edge of risk."
Michael Eisner, Walt Disney Company Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

"Understand the urgency of the situation. Half-measures simply won't do. The only way to grow is to abandon your strategy of doing what you did yesterday, but better. Commit."
Seth Godin, New marketing guru and author of "Purple Cow"
